Facebook Is Gobbling Less of Users' Time

Image
The social media industry may have to struggle to rehydrate in light of some surprising and troubling metrics Facebook released on Wednesday. In addition to a pause in user growth, there have been signs that user engagement may have reversed course. The decline may have something to do with Facebook's efforts to recover from accusations that it has provided fertile ground for fake news. CEO Mark Zuckerberg last month promised to steer the company toward refocusing on the user experience. Better User Experience Zuckerberg stunned the industry during the company's fourth quarter earnings announcement on Wednesday, saying that while the company remained profitable, recent changes to shift the platform's focus away from news toward more meaningful interactions with friends and family had resulted in users spending 50 million fewer hours per day on the site. Daily active users in the U.S. and Canada fell by 700,000 from the third to the f...

Image
Mobile phone usage can add a considerable, often unexpected sum to your travel costs, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Take a few simple precautions and you’ll barely have to pay a penny, leaving you free to enjoy your trip without worry. Here are five essential tips for using your phone while travelling. 1. Switch off data roaming Cutting out your data usage while you’re abroad will save you a huge amount of money, so to say it’s worth doing is an understatement. What is data roaming? When your phone uses data roaming, it accesses the internet using another mobile network. You are still billed by your own provider, and these bills are much higher than your regular plan. To switch off data roaming, go to your phone’s settings and select Mobile Networks. Press Data Roaming, then choose the option to turn it off. 2. Use free Wi-Fi Chances are you’ll be too busy to check your phone most of the time, but there’ll be occasions when an internet connecti...

Batteries in iPhones could have shorter life spans

Image
There was some bad news for owners of the latest iPhone models on Monday. Batteries in the iPhone 8 and X may have shorter life spans than those in prior models, according to  an article  in ZDNet. The battery in contributor Adrian Kingsley-Hughes' iPhone 8 Plus was racking up recharge cycles at an alarming rate, he wrote. A recharge cycle occurs when a phone is charged from zero power to 100 percent. Typically, phone batteries begin losing their effectiveness after 500 recharges. Up to that point, they can hold up to 80 percent of their charge. After that, it's usually downhill for the battery. After only four months, Kingsley-Hughes discovered that his new iPhone had hit 91 recharge cycles, a much faster rate than he'd seen in his previous iPhones. At that rate, the battery would last about 20 months -- or less, if wear and tear were factored into the calculations. "That's scary, doubly so when I consider that this iPhone hasn't been heavily use...

Zidane Hails Bale and Ronaldo

Image
Zinedine Zidane praised goal-scorers Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted twice in a 3-1 victory as Real Madrid finally claimed a Champions League win at Borussia Dortmund. Ronaldo marked his 150th European game with second-half goals after Bale's stunning early volley gave Real the lead at Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored Dortmund's consolation goal with just over half an hour left, but the Germans were simply out-played by holders Real. Having also netted twice against Apoel, Ronaldo has now scored four goals in just two Champions League games this season. "I’m happy for Cristiano... again! I’m delighted for Ronaldo and Bale," said Zidane. This is the first time Dortmund have lost at home to Real in seven European games while holders Madrid have now scored in 38 successive Champion League games. "It is difficult to play in this stadium, we have never won here, so this victory was important to us...

Conte says he wants |More From Morata

Image
Antonio Conte warned Alvaro Morata not to rest on his laurels after the Spain striker hit his first Premier League hat-trick in Chelsea's 4-0 demolition of Stoke City. Morata has made a strong start to his first season with Chelsea and the former Real Madrid star was too hot for Stoke to handle at the bet365 Stadium. The 24-year-old has six goals in his first six appearances for the English champions. Conte was impressed by Morata's performance, but the Blues boss wants his forward to maintain that level throughout the entire season. "Morata played a good game. A really good performance. Now he has to continue this way to be a great striker," Conte said. Chelsea remain three points behind Manchester City, but Conte isn't concerned about the flying start made by the leaders and second-placed Manchester United. "I think we have to be focused at what we do and not others. We want to fight in every competition we are playing," Cont...

Hazards Time to Shine

Image
Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard can make his mark on a season that has so far been hampered by his slow return from injury in the blockbuster Champions League clash at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, coach Antonio Conte said. The Belgian fractured his ankle while training for his country in June and has only been able to make one start for Chelsea, in the 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest in the League Cup last week. He has yet to score in his four substitute appearances in the Premier League and Europe but is primed to start against Diego Simeone's side in the first Champions League game at Atletico's new, 68 000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano stadium. Hazard, who English media reports say is on the verge of agreeing an improved contract with the Premier League champions, has struggled to repeat his impressive domestic displays in the Champions League, scoring only five times in 25 starts, with his last European goal coming in March 2015. Conte said that Haza...

Both clubs finally reached an agreement for a reported initial €55 million on Thursday and the Brazilian-born striker has now completed his medical with the Spanish giants. "I’m very happy to return home, I’ve always said it, Atletico is my home, I’m very, very happy," he told the club's website. However, Atletico said he will begin training immediately and is likely to be in the stands when Chelsea are the visitors for the first ever Champions League game at Atletico's new Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday. PSG v Bayern

Image
Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich both won impressively in the first round of games, and now have the opportunity to take control of Group B when they meet at the Parc des Princes. While Paris were equalling their biggest European away victory with a 5-0 success at Celtic FC, Bayern were easing past RSC Anderlecht 3-0 in Munich, although history suggests the German side could face a testing evening in France. The teams have met in six previous matches – all in the Uefa Champions League group stage – and all but one of those contests were won by the home side. The most recent encounters came in the first group stage in 2000/01 – a season that culminated in Bayern winning the competition for the fourth time. Home substitute Laurent Leroy's 90th-minute strike gave Paris a 1-0 victory at the Parc des Princes on 26 September 2000 before Bayern turned the tables in Munich, goals from Hasan Salihamidžic (3) – now the club...
